Annie Miller entered the Pre-Raphaelite circle as a model for William Holman Hunt, who contemplated marrying her. She was the model for his famous work 'The Awakening Conscience' of 1858, now in the Tate.
However, Miller annoyed Hunt by continuing to socialise with other artists, Rossetti in particular. This drawing dates from the period after her break with Hunt, when Rossetti helped her by employing her as a model.
