Maritime paintings

Liverpool has a rich history of maritime painting. In the 19th century it was home to some of the most important ship portraitists then working.

This heritage is reflected in the gallery's collection. Besides an exceptional body of work from this 'Liverpool School', there are also paintings from the late 18th century and the 20th century. Many of the paintings are of merchant ships associated with the port of Liverpool itself.
