Schools

A teacher and pupils on a gallery

We welcome classes from all schools to our museums and galleries and offer a wide range of support for students at key stages 1 to 4. We also have a growing number of sessions suitable for students in post-16 education, students who are studying English as a second language and students who have special needs.

We offer class sessions, courses and resources, the majority targeting the National Curriculum. These learning opportunities are available in all our museums and galleries and cover both the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. They are all free of charge.

We offer you, the teacher, the opportunity to:

  • bring your students and study in your own way without restriction. We call these self-guided sessions.
  • book a museum-led session in which a member of our staff introduces your students to some of our marvellous objects.
  • run your own teacher-led session using specially provided resources, after you have attended the appropriate teachers' course.
  • join a familiarisation course to learn more about a specific theme or gallery before running your own self-guided session.

We do ask you to book all visits and sessions in advance, giving as much notice as possible. When you contact us we can give you details of lunch and cloakroom facilities, workbooks and rooms, as well as ideas for themed visits across our museums and galleries.

We have established schools networks in a number of LEAs to develop closer links with teachers. If you are interested in joining one of them, please contact us.
