The Selection Committee of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival (HRWIFF), selected the 'Make the Link, Break the Chain' film Mbindaan Du Jaam (A Maid is not a Slave - see links below for this film) to be shown at 'Youth Producing Change' at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival (June 2008). The film was produced as part of our off-line work in Senegal by the Mariamma Ba school based on Goree Island.
The film was selected from a pool of over 250 submissions submitted by youth filmmakers from across the globe including South Africa, Kosovo and Palestine. Jennifer Nedbalsky the Programme Manager for the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival said:
"The power of your film is a true achievement, and we offer our deep congratulations. We are thrilled to be able to include it in our festival this year."
The students from a number of schools in Liverpool, Senegal and Haitil schools have created short videos on the theme of slavery. Some describe the participants' understanding of the transatlantic slave trade and its modern impact. Others are more of a video diary, looking at life in a country directly affected by the slave trade.
