We run a varied and ever-changing programme of tours, workshops, courses and demonstrations for all tastes, ages and abilities. Favourites include craft workshops at the National Conservation Centre, gallery talks at the Walker Art Gallery and Lady Lever Art Gallery, lectures at the Merseyside Maritime Museum and Thursday lunchtime talks at World Museum Liverpool's Treasure House Theatre.

Details of all of these sessions can be found here in our talks and lectures section. The suitability of each event is labelled, however you can always get in touch if you are not sure.

National Museums Liverpool welcomes groups but you may need to reserve your places in advance, so check the details. For further details contact us here.

We publish a quarterly ‘Exhibitions and Events’ guide which describes the exhibition programme in all our museums and galleries as well as activities of interest to adults. To join our mailing list contact us here.

Community projects with older people

A Stroll Through Time

Stroll Through Time events for older members of the community take place every week, on Tuesdays at Sudley House, Wednesdays at the Lady Lever Art Gallery and Thursdays at Merseyside Maritime Museum.

The Stroll was first introduced in the year 2000. We had become aware that older people living in the community needed friendly and welcoming places to visit. They could also contribute immensely to our record of the region’s social history.

The project began using Heritage Lottery funding, was then supported by the Liverpool Housing Action Trust and is now an integral part of National Museums Liverpool’s learning programme.

Groups who take part in the Stroll include:

  • community groups interested in Liverpool’s history
  • day centre members
  • older people in residential accommodation
  • older people attending specialized groups such as Stroke Association, Tremor Association and similar organisations.

Stroll Through Time is all about reminiscing. A group of volunteer reminiscence guides escort your group around the museum and engage participants in conversation that prompts memory recall. We set aside a room for your use and comfort and can arrange for cups of tea. Alternatively your group may wish to bring a packed lunch.

As part of their Stroll many groups enjoy a session in a quiet room where they can get hands-on with real objects. The activity stimulates memory recall and the objects can be chosen for the interests of the group. The Stroll is especially good for people with memory loss and we are especially interested in working with these groups.

It is very easy to book. Fill in the contact form and tick the Stroll Through Time option and we will get back to you.

Taking the museums to the community

We have prepared a series of reminiscence resource boxes reflecting local history and public events. They can be used in the museums or borrowed for use elsewhere.

Working together across Liverpool

Building on the success of the annual Festival 50 events, National Museums Liverpool is continuing to work with festival partners including Tate Liverpool, the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, Merseyside Dance Initiative and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic to develop new and interesting opportunities specifically for people over 50.

Volunteering as a reminiscence guide

We are always looking for new volunteers to help with the Stroll Through Time programmes. Further details about volunteer opportunities are available on this website.

Reminiscence workshops for activity organisers

One day training workshops can be arranged for groups of people wishing to be involved in reminiscence work in the community.
