Lady Lever Art Gallery exterior view

Collections

The collections represent the personal taste of the first Lord Leverhulme. He began buying art in the late 1880s to use as advertising for the 'Sunlight Soap' brand that he produced. From this modest beginning Leverhulme quickly grew into a discerning collector.

Further information about how the collections developed and the gallery was created is available in the Lever the Collector gallery, open from 5 July 2008, and in the History of the Lady Lever Art Gallery section of this website.
