Paper conservation

Paper conservation cares for many different items from across National Museums Liverpool's venues. These include:

'Study of the head of Giuliano de Medici by Michelangelo' by Tintoretto
‘Study of the head of Giuliano de’ Medici by Michelangelo’ by Tintoretto

  • books
  • documents
  • maps
  • plans
  • navigational sea charts
  • prints
  • drawings
  • watercolours
  • photographs

To preserve these items, the staff share a wide variety of expertise. Many have specialist backgrounds in areas such as fine art on paper. The fine art department contains many important works. These include pieces by the Pre-Raphaelites and Old Master drawings, most notably by Tintoretto and Mantegna.

The maritime records centre’s extensive collections include the work of the local photographic company, Stewart Bale Ltd. This archive includes over 200,000 glass and film sheet negatives taken between the 1920s and 1970s. Subjects include shipbuilding, architecture and the blitz in Liverpool.

We have developed new methods for the preservation of pressed plant specimens and also for original collector’s labels for zoological specimens held by the science department.

Much of the section’s time is spent preparing items for exhibitions within National Museums Liverpool and also for many exhibitions worldwide. Care and treatment also encompasses work to improve storage of paper items throughout the collections. This ensures that all collections are available for research both today and in the future.

Treatments range considerably, from removing dirt and stains, degraded self adhesive tape and rusty stapes through to repairing tears and providing supports for weakened material.

Care includes assessing the environment to reduce damage caused by dust, temperature, humidity and atmospheric pollutants during display and storage. Physical storage care involves making new supports, folders, envelopes, mounts and boxes.

Paper conservation leads the way in emergency planning for care of all National Museums Liverpool collections, which includes close liaison with the Fire Service. We have also contributed a large amount of development time to procurement strategy for exhibition display cases, working towards good collection care for all objects in galleries.
