Overpaint removal

A catalogue photograph of Francesco di Giorgio's 'St Bernardino Preaching' from 1928 shows evident discolouration of the painting around the edges. This would fit with a treatment date nearly 100 years earlier, when the painting was probably transferred from its original poplar panel to canvas, possibly around the time when it was sold to William Roscoe in the early 19th century.

Once all the varnish had been removed, the extent of the overpaint was apparent.

Follow the links in the gallery below to see six details from the painting during the removal of the overpaint.
