Opened on 31 March 2006, Big Art for Little Artists is the first dedicated children's gallery in any UK national museum.

Big Art was made possible by major grants from the JP Jacobs Charitable Trust and the DCMS/Wolfson Foundation Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, with a generous donation in memory of Larry Rathbone from his children Marilyn, Jenny and Andrew.

Activities and themes

The gallery is a fun, colourful and enchanting space specially for our younger visitors, including families, school groups, childrens clubs, nurseries and play groups. Inside, children of all ages can explore art through many activities, all inspired by National Museums Liverpool's collections

Within the gallery children can:

  • look at, touch and find out more about original art and craftworks from the Walker's collection
  • create their own artwork which can be displayed in the Walker, on the website, or taken back to home or school
  • explore ideas about art and artists
  • use the activities as a starting point for exploring the rest of the Walker Art Gallery
  • use their creativity and imagination to develop skills including language and communication, literacy and numeracy, through a variety of different artistic techniques

There are three themed areas within the Big Art gallery:

  • a magical story area full of books, sounds, pictures and games where children and families can read, listen, look, write and be inspired to make up their own stories
  • a dressing up area where children can find out more about the characters portrayed in the Walker collections using costume, puppets and role play
  • a lively activity area where little artists can create their own masterpieces
